This past week I spent my “tidy-up” time building an Ikea closet. Part of the renovations I have been undergoing was to turn my closet into an en-suite. Check. I had brought all my clothes together to do some Konmari last week on them and it was time to get them back where they belonged. After I was done, I looked back on the experience and realized I had something much more important than a new closet in my life.

7 Steps to Being Accomplished

  1. Just get started. Things may seem over-whelming , however, the key is to break it down into smaller bits. Build your foundation first, then add the essentials and finish off with the added accoutrements. One step at a time.
  2. Sometimes it is not a one-person job. Building something on your own can give you a real sense of accomplishment. So do it. However, if the project gets overwhelming, ask for help. Some jobs are designed for more than one person. Don’t try to go it alone.
  3. Change your perspective. You are going to get frustrated. That’s a fact. Sometimes the directions don’t make sense or you have to stand on your head to get that bolt in the right spot. If this is the case, take a minute and change your perspective. Being frustrated is an indicator something needs to change. Forcing it can cause something to break.
  4. Use your resources. Every piece of Ikea comes with a list of parts and how to put things together. Life doesn’t come with an instruction booklet. What we should be doing though, is using all our resources. Becoming aware of our surroundings and the people and things we can use around us will help get the job done.
  5. Celebrate your successes. Take time to step back and appreciate yourself and the things you have accomplished. Share them. Appreciate the people who helped you. Tell them.
  6. Plan the next one. What’s the next thing you want to do?
  7. Repeat 1-6.

I want to make sure what I am adding to my life and in my life has meaning. I know it might sound funny but building something with use and purpose makes me feel pretty fantastic. Building anything in your life which has a use and a purpose feels the same way. This can be applied to every area of your life. Careers, relationships, health, and personal finances. The key is to be clear on the purpose first. If it is not clear, then it is time to sit down and evaluate your goals and values.
